Communal - (English) - Of, by, or belonging to the people of a community; shared or participated in by the public.
Sgraffito - (Italian) - A technique of decoration in which a surface layer of paint, plaster, slip, etc., is incised to reveal a ground of contrasting color.
Totem - (Ojibwa) - A spirit being, sacred object, or symbol that serves as an emblem of a group of people, such as a family, clan, lineage, or tribe.
The Communal Sgraffito Totem Project (aka CST) is an ongoing interactive series of ceramic forms created collaboratively between Erickson and the public. Each piece begins with a raw ceramic form that is painted with a contrasting liquid clay. The form is offered to the public for carving, then brought back to the studio and fired.
